This talk begins by discussing the importance of actively promoting independence for children with autism of all ages and abilities. The case will be made that the majority of children and young people can become more independent and this can contribute to greater self-confidence and the opening up of further opportunities to develop and live more fulfilling lives. This is followed by looking at the key areas where independence needs to be encouraged including personal, social and life skills.
There will be an opportunity to briefly use a basic assessment tool to establish a starting point for your child’s journey. Geoff will then outline a range of approaches that can be used in each of the areas and provide opportunities to try out several of these. The talk will end with a short presentation of an independence software tool that enables individuals on the autism spectrum to work through routines in a modern way using the same handheld devices as their peer group
Note: if you didn’t attend the 1st session in May you are more than welcome to attend this session
