Aspergers Syndrome:
“Through School and Beyond”
GIVEN BY
Martyn Jowett – ProACT/Deputy SENCO
The Autism Spectrum is wide and varied in nature. Individuals on the high-functioning end or those with Aspergers Syndrome more often than not enter the mainstream school system. Due to the ‘hidden’ nature of Aspergers Syndrome the true nature of the problem or indeed even the diagnosis does not appear until the move to Senior school. Presented by Martyn Jowett who has over twenty five years working in special education with individuals on the autism spectrum, the course looks at some of the problems and pitfalls of entering mainstream school. From that difficult first transition, through reasonable adjustments, bullying, puberty and where to get help, Martyn’s course finishes with the individual leaving school or progressing to college. The course is presented using a combination of short talks, workshop activities and group discussion to suit a range of learning styles and is suitable for anybody supporting a young person through mainstream education such as parents, teachers and other educational support staff.“
